Lingerie Guide

For both the shy and confident woman, this shoot will empower the female body and leave you walking away with more or rediscovered self-assurance.

Welcome

Hello, Gorgeous! Are you in for a treat or what! Boudoir is such a fun, and uplifting experience and I’m thrilled you’ve decided to show your body the love and admiration it deserves. Whether you booked this as a gift, for yourself, or were gifted a booking, you’ve booked the most glamorous and pampering photoshoot photography has to offer. For both the shy and confident woman, this shoot will empower the female body and leave you walking away with more or rediscovered self-assurance.

Before you begin any prepping stages, it’s important to start thinking about what you want to wear to your shoot. From what I’ve cultivated from my years of boudoir experiences is that attention to wardrobe is crucial! Besides the work I do behind the camera, your wardrobe choices determine how your final images will turn out. Finding the outfit that’s right for you will not only accentuate your attributes, but it’ll make you feel more comfortable and fearless in your body.

This guide is your lingerie bible. Many women wear the wrong type of lingerie on a day to day basis, not just causing discomfort but affecting your breasts in ways such as causing sagging, shapelessness, scaring, problems in posture and so much more. I’ll take you through each step of selecting your photoshoot attire, so you’re more than ready for both your special day and every day. Lady to lady, I want to give you the best support in finding your best support! ;)

Firstly, I want to remind you that every body type is different and beautiful in its own way! We tend to be our own worst enemy. That said, I understand we all have insecurities and peeves that others might not see, and we cannot help but notice. That’s why I love boudoir so much because it helps teach you love for your body as a whole and turns you from being your worst enemy to your biggest fan. So, yes, we favor certain features over others, but there’s no reason to hide. With the right kind of attire, we can highlight and enhance those features you favor and still give love and acceptance to those you don’t.

Knowing Your Body Type

Women fall under five body type categories: rectangle, pear, inverted triangle, apple, and hourglass.

  • Rectangle

If your body is fairly proportionate, meaning your bust, waist, and bum are around the same size, you’ll want to follow these guidelines. Bras and panties that create an illusion of volume will be your go-to style; this means really working to emphasize your “girls.” For this, consider push up bras as your new best friend. Bras like this with extra padding will contour your bust to give it more of a boost while smoothing out the rest of your torso. Don’t forget some boy short panties! Its low cut, low rise style will accentuate your frame perfectly.

  • Pear

Those of you with fuller bums but smaller chests can rely on the pear body type reference. Since your lower half already draws more attention than your upper, you’ll want to find styles that bring some focus to your chest. If you’re looking to show a little more bosom and a little less bottom, strapless bras or decorative straps are cute and captivating styles that bring this balance! Particularly for my A cup ladies, underwire demi-cups are another flattering yet subtle way to add more cleavage and highlight your breasts. Babydoll lingerie dresses will cover your lower half and focus all the attention on your bust.

As for your bum, you already have the volume, so try not to let your briefs outshine you. Go for a simple design, like the bikini, that has a cut and style that’ll hug your curves in all the right places.

  • Inverted Triangle

For my girls who are the direct opposite of my pear ladies, having a bustier set of twins and a smaller bum, you are my inverted triangles. Your bust is already voluptuously apparent, so all you need is a cute underwire bra. These bras will give you the support you need and a little extra oomph. To bring a little more attention to your lower body, try a nice ruffled or lace panty for more volume and eye-catching detail. Another tip I suggest would be picking a low rise style to sit at the widest part of your hips to create more dimension.

  • Apple

Those with a wider torso, flatter bum, but bustier chest best fit the apple frame. Your playful curves have many options. Low plunge-line babydoll slips will be your ideal lingerie. A graceful balconette style bra will support your chest without overemphasizing it and leave more focus on your lower half. Pair your balconette with some high-waisted panties that’ll exaggerate your torso and emphasize your butt. T-shirt bras are another fun way to play. Their minimal styling will help complement your natural bust while drawing more attention to your panty line. On the reverse, babydoll dresses will highlight your breasts without overshadowing your bottom.

  • Hourglass

If you haven’t fit any of the descriptions above and are still lost in lingerie, have no fear. This last frame is almost a combination of all the previous descriptions. Your playful curves have many options. You are my girls who have an ample sized bust and bottom with a noticeably smaller waistline. You most similarly fit the hourglass figure. Full slips will flatter your feminine curvature as their fitted style will slim the stomach and hug your natural curves. Take on sensual with high-waisted lingerie or an alluring lace G-string that will bring out your tiny waist and show more love to your defined hips. For your upper half, balconettes will expose your neckline and accent and support your bust.

Regardless of your figure, highlighting each individual feature will give you the most out of your shoot. Now that you know what types of lingerie to shop for let’s dive into each style and look.

  • Final Note

Above all, remember to own your look. Find the look, style, and color that’s going to make you feel your most confident. You are captivating.

Color Choices

Amongst the many styles of lingerie is the various color choices. Are you pretty in pink or red hot? Should bold be a go or a hell no? These are a few things to consider when picking out the right lingerie. You want your underwear to enhance your beauty, not wash you out. So, what color of lingerie looks best with your skin tone?

We ladies have a range of beautiful and flourishing features that makes us all unique. Typically our features fall under general subcategories that will act as a guide for what color best accents us. Before determining what color is best for your skin tone, the first step is to decide which tone you are. Now, this might seem obvious to some, but if you are a little unsure, there are a couple of ways that’ll reveal your true shade.

Take a look at the veins on the inside of your wrists. If your veins appear green, you have a warm or darker skin tone. Those of you with blue and purple veins fall under the cool or fair toned category. If neither of those descriptions fit you and you find yourself with blue and green veins, then you probably have a neutral or olive skin-tone.

Just as eye-color acts as a guide for the perfect lingerie color, it can also reveal the underlying tone of your skin. If you take a moment to look in your eyes, you’ll find little flecks. These flecks typically are pale or gold. My ladies with pale dots are most likely cool-toned, while the gold flecks indicate warm-toned complexions. A more general way to take note of this is to go off the vague assumption that blue or light brown eyes belong to cool-toned individuals, and dark brown eyes belong to warm-toned. Neutral-toned individuals tend to have a range of eye-colors, but green eyes typically would fall under this category.

As the last tip, I advise taking note of the amount of melanin in your skin. Melanin is a dark brown or black pigment in our bodies responsible for how our skin reacts to sun exposure. Melanin can also help you determine your skin tone. Those with warm and neutral tones tend to tan easily and rarely burn, while others who are cool-toned take longer to tan and burn very quickly.

Now that you know your skin-tone let’s find your perfect shoot shade!

Still can’t decide?

A way you can settle this tiebreaker is going based on your hair and eye color. For one thing, blondes look stunning in pastel shades like a soft pink just as brunettes do in rich, velvety colors, like a deep red or a fetching plum. Similarly, redheads showcase their beauty in earthy tones like greens, blues, and coppers. If we look back at eye color, light eyes indicate a more cool-toned complexion so they would favor the softer, powdered pigments, whereas dark eyes will pop with warm colors like yellow.

Things to Consider

  • Some patterns can be too distracting to the camera, so if you do choose to go this route balance out your look with a basic panty or bra.

  • Also, keep in mind shading. For example, sometimes an off-white can look better than a pure white. So, keep in mind your color guide when choosing your shade as well.

  • Always bring a backup! This means shoes, outfits, accessories, you name it! In case anything is to happen before or during your shoot it’s always reassuring to know you have an extra pair of something.

Jewelry & Props

While jewelry and props are always a nice addition to lingerie, they aren’t always necessary and can sometimes be distracting. A pro-tip I’d like to encourage in selecting your boudoir outfits is less is more. Some pieces that would complement looks without overpowering or drawing too much attention away would be pearls, flowers, props such as lipstick, and other simplistic items. Sentimental pieces are always welcomed in boudoir, as this shoot produces intimate photos with unique stories. For this reason, certain poses can be used to capture your sentiment without distracting away from you.

Shoes

It’s always best to bring a black or skin colored pair of shoes for two reasons. Firstly, they match everything! Regardless of the look you choose, these shoes will provide a subtle undertone of complement that will capitalize on your legs. I’d recommend skin toned shoes for shorter or short legged ladies as the color will make your legs look longer. Two tips in shoe style selection are go higher and avoid straps. Straps cut the leg and can create the illusion of shortness; this is something especially to avoid if you want to create length throughout the body. Heels also help push your bum out more, making it a little easier to arch your lower back.

  • Bikinis

Bikini style is a panty that has skinny sides and medium back coverage. These panties sit at the widest part of hips creating more dimension and elongating torsos and have high-cut leg holes, creating an illusion for longer legs. They’re also one of the more comfortable styles. So, if you’re looking for a little extra coverage or would feel more comfortable showing less cheek, this is the style for you! Its typical fabrics include cotton and microfiber, but you can also find it in more risqué delicates such as lace.

  • Thong & G-String

Thongs are the perfect piece for a minimal and risqué look! Thongs are a T-shaped panty with a waistline that sits about three inches below the waist. The sides of the panty will hit right around the hip bone depending on your torso length. Thongs tend to vary in fabric types such as lace and cotton and can be quite comfortable.

Like the thong, G-strings give minimal coverage; in fact, your tush will have absolutely no coverage in the back. The G-string has a front fabric and a thin string to complete the back coming in delicate fabrics such as lace and satin. I’d recommend either of these panties for someone looking to flaunt curvature and define waistlines.

  • Cheeky Panty

Cheeky panties are a cute and trendy style of panties that women love to use to show a peek of the cheek. The half coverage provides just enough to draw attention to the bum without stealing the show. Leaving a little imagination to the eye, this style typically comes in lacey fabrics and sits at the widest part of the hipbone. I would recommend the cheeky panty for any and every woman! This style is so universal with its hint of bum that it’ll be helpful to both the lady looking to emphasize or minimize.

  • Hipsters

Hipsters sit right on the waistband and have low-cut holes, giving about ¾ of the cheek. They provide more coverage in the front than most panties do. Like its sister the bikini, it’s a more comforting style and helps to elongate torsos. Very breathable and providing mobility, it comes in fabrics such as lace, mesh, cotton, and microfiber. I’d recommend this to ladies who aren’t too focused on drawing attention to their lower half and are just looking for some coverage and comfort.

  • Boy Shorts

The boxer inspired panty is a more comfortable and conservative route to take in choosing lingerie. The boy short panty offers complete coverage in both the front and rear. It has a very rectangular shape to it with a low-cut leg causing squaring in the hips. This sits nicely on body types that have a similar shape such as rectangle bodies. Though, just because this style covers your bum, it doesn’t mean it can’t be as playful or sexy as the others. When paired with the right top to highlight your other assets, boyshorts can be a great complementing piece. Boyshorts are an eye-catching option for ladies looking to draw attention away from their lower half and bring the focus to their upper half. This style comes in fabrics such as cotton, microfiber, and nylon.

  • Bra and Panty Sets

Bra-and-panty sets are a go-to look for a lot of women. I get it, it’s what we wear almost every day. It’s supportive, comfortable, and it’s already in our collection. While I want you to feel supportive and comfortable during your shoot, I also want you to feel sexy, confident and empowered when you highlight your bountiful curves or add a little extra perk to your breasts. So, I encourage you, instead of reaching for that Sunday t-shirt bra, try grabbing your ole faithful push-up or demi-cup. This is a time where what you have on underneath is meant to be seen and flaunted! So, work it, sister!

As I said, bra-and-panty sets are a go-to look for most of the women I’ve photographed. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great choice! It not only flatters your bust but it’ll also highlight your bottom. Though, if you tend to worry or get anxious over how your stomach looks or how you feel towards your torso then perhaps a bra and pant set isn’t for you. There’s still plenty of other lingerie options for you to choose from that can accentuate the features you love and distract from the elements you worry over, but more on that later.

For now, I want to dive into the different ways you can pair your bra and panty set. With so many bras and panty styles to choose from, it can be easy to get lost in lingerie. Let’s take a look at each option.

  • Balconette Bra

Balconettes are very similar to demi-cups except they give even less coverage. Balconettes will cover about three-quarters of breasts, providing just enough material to hide the nipple. The height of the cups are shorter, and the straps are broader set than usual. Balconettes are an excellent perk for women with medium to larger sized breasts.

Again, tread lightly in shopping, and keep in mind the nipple exposure.

  • Underwire Bras

Underwire bras are supportive styles that have a wire sewn into the bottom of the cups for added support and comfort. They help add more shape to the breasts by adjusting your boobs to sit in all the right places. In other words, they help give a little bit of perk and eliminate sagging, drooping, and spillage. I highly recommend considering an underwire bra if you want to feel secure and comfortable during your shoot.

A bonus to underwire bras is that they come in various styles, so they’re perfect for any breast shape or size!

  • Strapless Bra

Maybe your concern doesn’t lie in amping the size of your chest but rather proportioning your assets. Strapless bras are a seductive way to draw attention to the chest and shoulders without adding an extra push. Strapless bras can get tricky with bigger breasts because they don’t have the additional assistance to hold them up. So, I’d recommended this style for women with a natural perk or are smaller chest, and ladies who are just looking for a little balance in upper and lower body focus.

  • T-shirt Bras

Now if you’re still reaching for that t-shirt bra or maximum comfort, I completely understand. Their smooth and minimal fabric is hard to stray from. To each their own. However, you might want to consider adding some contrast with things like a lacey texture or fun accessories to make for a more striking look.

Corsets, Bustiers, Hybrids

Corsets, bustiers, and hybrids are shapewear styles intended to control and refigure body types. They’re the perfect piece to hug the body and show off bountiful curves. Though, it’s essential to know which shapewear is best for your body type or shoot vision.

  • Corsets

Whether your goal is to tuck, boost, or create your curves, corsets are one of the best shapewears. They can make you look classy, chic, or sexy. They’ll emphasize your well-rounded curves or accentuate your body with the illusion of a more buxom shape with a slimmed down tummy and a tight defined waist. Corsets come from strong, yet flexible fabrics such as cotton and steel boning but can also feature lace backs for cinching. Since this style comes without breast cups, it can leave women looking smaller in the chest area. I would recommend the corset for ladies looking to bring in, create, or emphasize their waistlines such as hourglass and rectangle figures.

  • Bustiers

Bustiers come with a built-in bra that is meant to boost the breasts. Typically, they end right above the waistline, revealing the hips. Bustiers have a hook-and-eye closure found in either the front or the back instead of lace like corsets do. Bustiers usually feel less confining to wear, since their fabric is flexible. They typically contain stretch panels, elastic, and soft plastic boning. Bustiers are perfect for women looking to add a little extra oomph to their upper half without too much definition on the lower and waistline.

  • Hybrid Styles

A flattering balance between the two styles is hybrids. Hybrids are a combination of corsets and bustiers that work to cinch in the waist with a lacing back but a bustier or cupped chest. While it has a similar cinch style to the corset, it won’t dramatize the waistline as much as the corset would. However, it’s still an admirable alternative for women looking for a balance that will give a slight and more natural way of accentuating their features. Bonus: This style tends to be a little cheaper as well, so you get a little bit of everything!

Regardless of the style that best fits your body, the effects of all three forms are perfect for all body types. Though ladies with larger cup sizes might find more comfort in them as they provide more chest support, ladies also looking to cover their midsection or torsos would find much love in these comforting styles. Keep in mind that this shapewear can limit posing options.

  • Slip

Slips are a sweet and sexy dress-like style often worn underneath mini and summer dresses. They’re a much more comfortable option that will still accentuate the breasts and highlight the lower half together. They often have cups built in for support and can either hug the body or loosely hang from it. They come in various fabrics such as sheer material, lace, and silk. Ideally, slips that sit right under or right above the tush photograph the best. The reason being is that they give a balance of playful and sultry while highlighting all points of the body: chest, butt, and legs.

  • Clothing

Ladies wanting a little more coverage can find comfort in casual clothing as a lingerie option. Yes, you can wear clothes in boudoir! Pieces like leather jackets, button-ups, and shoulder sweaters are all cozy yet seductive choices. Pairing a jersey with a cute panty or a t-shirt with a fiery thong and knee highs are always fun options as well. If you do opt for a sports jersey or button up shirt, I encourage choosing one from the women’s section as it’s very easy for figures to get lost in the bagginess of men’s clothing. Also, the women’s wear will hug your curvature better and give off a sexier tone.

  • Bodysuits

Bodysuits are form-fitting shirts that work well in boudoir. They give a slimming look to the tummy area, and have high-cut leg openings that create length in the legs. They’re perfect for both fashion and function. The tight fit on the body adds an alluring yet casual feel, and you’ll feel great while wearing it! Bodysuits are also very versatile. You can wear them with jeans, pants, or on their own. Not to mention, you can find styles with or without sleeves, which is perfect for ladies who want to draw attention away from the upper half of the body.

  • Belts and Garters

A garter belt is a belt worn around the waist or hips with attached garters or fasteners to hold up thigh-high pantyhose or stockings. There are two different types of thigh-highs that you should take note of when searching for your perfect piece: kinds with and kinds without rubber. My advice? Ditch the rubber. Not only can they not be worn with garters, but they tend to very tight on the thighs in a way that is both uncomfortable and unflattering. Stockings without rubber lay gently on a woman’s leg, without any of the constriction of rubber and attach nicely to garters.

Another note to take into consideration is that with garters practice makes perfect! They can be a bit tricky to attach stockings if you’re not used to it but are much easier after a few trials. I would recommend watching a few YouTube videos before the shoot to ensure you can put your outfit on with ease. Also, try not to pick a color that is so dark for your skin that it hides your legs completely. Shades that are too dark can create the illusion that your legs are much shorter than they are.

  • Baby Doll

Baby dolls are a type of nightgown that offer complete coverage while still giving the chest area some attention. Typically they come with built-in cups to perk up the breasts while the rest of the dress flows away from the body. It’s the perfect look for ladies who would prefer to be clothed during their shoot but are looking to add a little extra spice. I’d recommend this for body types that have a more curvaceous body or larger lower half; you’ll be less likely to lose the shape in your look. Ladies with more square or inverted triangle body types may want to stray from this look as it’ll lack dimension. It comes in various fabrics such as sheer and silk for you to set a tone to your look.

  • Romper

Rompers are another alternative to consider for your shoot, especially if you’re looking for a little more coverage. A romper is a one-piece outfit that typically is in the style of shorts and a tank top. They tend to have waistbands that create some curvature in the body and fall short at the bum for an intriguing peek. I’d recommend a romper for ladies who are interested in the baby doll style but want a little more shape construction.
